BEYOND INTRODUCTION
Reflections from Groth & Sons. After nearly fifty years in the craft, I have come to believe that the most valuable lessons were never found on a drawing board. They were found in libraries and cathedrals. In workshops and theatres. In books. In conversations with remarkable people. And sometimes, in moments that, at the time, seemed entirely ordinary.
Over the years I have realised that architecture is rarely just about buildings. Libraries are not simply about books. Craftsmanship is not merely about making. Each is a doorway into something much larger.
Curiosity. Wonder. Kindness. Legacy.
Beyond the Drawing Board is a collection of essays exploring the ideas that have quietly shaped both my work and my life.
Some begin with a building. Others with a book, a conversation or a chance encounter. None are instruction manuals. They are simply reflections gathered over a lifetime of making, reading, travelling and, above all, looking up.
Projects demonstrate what Groth & Sons builds. These essays explore why it matters.
