THE BEGINNING

Every story starts somewhere...
The Groth & Sons Story began with a young apprentice carpenter in 1979 and has grown into a family business dedicated to bespoke residential libraries, fine interior joinery and timeless craftsmanship. During the early stages of his career, Amos spent time working in London, where he completed some of his earliest bespoke joinery projects, including a handcrafted residential bookcase completed in 1982.

KNOWLEDGE & INSPIRATION

Knowledge passed from one generation to the next...
Books have always occupied a special place within the Groth family. A three-volume set of The Modern Carpenter and Joiner, handed down from grandfather to father and eventually to Amos, helped foster an appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and historical woodworking techniques. The volumes remain in the family today and will one day be passed to Oscar. Alongside this influence, Amos credits his mother Kathleen with instilling a lifelong love of reading and learning. Together, these influences helped shape a career that would ultimately become focused on residential libraries.

DESIGN THINKING

The design process has always been part of the craft...
Although Groth & Sons is deeply rooted in craftsmanship, thoughtful design has always been equally important. Alongside his practical experience, Amos pursued formal studies in Interior Design, creating a unique perspective that bridges concept and construction. At Groth & Sons, design and craftsmanship remain inseparable.

Decades of experience shaped the philosophy...
Following his apprenticeship, Amos worked extensively in building and architectural restoration. Working on heritage homes developed a deep appreciation for proportion, detail and architectural context. These experiences helped form the design philosophy that continues to guide Groth & Sons today.

A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS

Skills passed through family and shared through work...
While Groth & Sons has always been defined by craftsmanship and design, it has also remained firmly rooted in family. Oliver worked alongside Amos for almost five years and played a significant role during the restoration and renovation of Woodlands before pursuing a career in plumbing. The image represents knowledge and values being shared through work undertaken together.

Understanding design through construction...
Having completed his Interior Design studies, Oscar combines formal design education with years of practical involvement in construction, manufacturing and installation. This reflects a long-standing Groth & Sons philosophy: good design is strongest when informed by an understanding of how things are made.

A CREATIVE HERITAGE

A tradition of making and creating...
The Groth tradition of craftsmanship extends beyond a single generation. Carpenters, joiners, decorative painters and designers appear throughout the family’s history. On his grandmother's side, the family can trace connections to British painter Harold Harvey of the Newlyn School. A common thread remains: a respect for making, creating and producing work of lasting value.

LOOKING FORWARD

One generation passing knowledge to the next...
While tools, technologies and methods continue to evolve, the fundamental principles of Groth & Sons remain unchanged. The continuation of the business is not simply about succession. It is about the transfer of knowledge. What began with an apprentice carpenter in 1979 now continues with a new generation of designers and makers.
